Abandoned pool and movie theater on Treasure Island.
Treasure Island is a man-made island created in 1936 from dredge of the Bay. The island had been the original intended location of San Francisco Airport but instead became the site of 1939 World’s Fair. The island was previously owned by the US Navy during WWII, where it was used a nuclear decontamination training site. Many areas of the island are still off limits to civilians because of dangerous levels of radiation and other toxic substances. Some of these are in or abut residential housing complexes. The island is at high risk of liquefaction during an earthquake, which means it could essentially sink into the sea.
